STAUNTON — At the Sept. 25 meeting of the Beverley Manor Chapter, National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, Regent Emma Jordan welcomed guests Patty Arnold, Nancy Doty, Donna Goble and Martha Saplak. She recognized new transfer member Jerry Lynn Shipplett. She also welcomed the past regent of the chapter, Virginia Windley, who now lives in Texas.
The regent, assisted by Chaplain Mary Ann Stripling, led the DAR opening ritual. Patriotic exercises included reciting the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution, in recognition of the 225th anniversary of the document's signing on Sept. 17, 1787. Guest speaker, the Rev. Warren L. Grant, spoke on the subject "If The Foundation Be Destroyed." He expressed concern that the Constitution is presently threatened by many forces.
Patricia Radney, chair of the membership committee, presented three new members, Clarice Allen, Frances Coltrain and Colleen Eagan. A certificate for fifty years of dedicated service from the NSDAR was presented to Past Chapter Regent Caroline Bell by Jordan.
National Defense Chair Alice Cassada gave a report on CIA Director David H. Petraeus' speech at the 121st DAR Continental Congress National Defense night. He noted the DAR's long support of the military, the veterans and their families. He accepted an award from NSDAR on behalf of all in uniform and at the CIA. His wife, Holly Petraeus, was presented the first ever President General's Medallion for her service to family and country.
Service for Veterans Chair Patti Hodson reported that a check for $120 for phone cards was mailed to DAR headquarters and 112 units of snacks has been sent to the U.S. medical center in Landstuhl, Germany for hospitalized veterans.
